“Buy a book, stop a crook!” is the slogan for the second annual Book ‘Em North Carolina Writers Conference and Book Fair. The event will take place at Robeson Community College on February 23, 2013 from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The event is free to attend, and over 40% of the book sales proceeds will go toward increasing literacy and decreasing the crime rate in Robeson County, North Carolina. The Book ‘Em Foundation, which was created as a partnership between authors and law enforcement to raise awareness of the correlation between literacy rates and crime rates, hosts the event. In its second year, they have more than 25 authors expected to be in attendance for fans to have the opportunity to talk with them as well as get an autographed copy of their books. There will also be publishers, literary agents, and book promoters.
During this one-day conference there will be panel discussions on topics including: Getting Published: What do Publishers Want, Settings in North Carolina, Overcoming Obstacles, Character Development, Ebooks: The Future, Writing Fantasies, Mysteries, The Self-Publisher, and many more. There will also be solo discussions by New York Times Bestseller author Mary Alice Monroe and Hollywood Producer/Director Chuck Williams.
Mary Alice Monroe has written over thirteen novels including The Beach House, The Book Club, The Long Road Home, and The Girl in the Mirror. Her most recent book, The Beach House Memoirs, is the prequel to The Beach House. Along with being a New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author, she has won numerous awards including the International Fiction Award for Green Fiction. You can view her full biography here. During her solo discussion, Monroe will be discussing her writing and “The Path to a Bestseller.”
Chuck Williams is a producer/director/actor from Los Angeles, California. He has produced such projects as Brother Bear, Pinocchio (video game), and Pocahontas (video game). He has also worked on other productions such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and The Beast. His solo discussion is entitled “Taking Books to Movies” and will discuss the process that this entails.
