April is National Poetry Month! So here are a few of our favorite poems!
1. “Lullaby” by W.H. Auden
The poem that has moved me most is “Lullaby” by W.H Auden. To me, poetry is all about the feeling it imposes on the reader and this poem gives me a calm nurturing feeling. This feeling reflects the poem’s title, which I think is the entire purpose. I also LOVE the lines:
“All the dreaded cards foretell.
Shall be paid, but from this night
Not a whisper, not a thought.
Not a kiss nor look be lost,”
And
“Time and fevers burn away
Individual beauty from
Thoughtful children, and the grave
Proves the child ephemeral:”
The poem has great rhythm that makes the reading flow and roll on like a lullaby.
2. “Siren Song” by Margaret Atwood
It’s sexy and sultry and seductive and… Even though you know, all the way through, what she’s doing, she still manages to make you want to crash your ship just to find the singer.
3. “What do Women Want?” by Kim Addonizio
This poem is defiant in a way that spills out a plethora of emotions. It’s flagrantly proud, but secretly angry, insecure, self-conscious, scared, and dogmatic. The implication that the narrator is everything the idealized version of herself isn’t paints a fuller, more realistic picture of this person.
4. “Invictus” by William Earnest Henley
“I am the master of my fate/ I am the captain of my soul” This poem is such a powerful piece. It uses a traditional rhythm of ABAB, but the sea and heavenly imagery pains a vivid picture. The ending, however, is my favorite part because it leaves a resounding affect. I am the one who controls my own life. There is truth in the words.
