You may have heard about Digital Learning Day before because every year there are thousands of events to celebrate digital learning in the United States and worldwide.

Digital learning is a new concept compared to previous teaching methods. It’s any instructional practice that uses technology to enhance the learning experience for students. Digital learning provides constant access to content, feedback through assessment, a portable learning environment, and a more fully customizable instruction for teachers so students may reach their full educational potential.

Sounds pretty great right? The minds behind Digital Learning think so too.

According to its website, Digital Learning “advances school reform by increasing equity and access to educational opportunities, improving effectiveness and productivity of teachers and administrators, providing student-centered learning to ensure college and career readiness for all students, and recognizing teachers as education designers.”

With so many recent technological developments, more and more technology is being used in the classroom, including smart boards, e-readers, apps, software, and more. Yet these zones of innovation are restricted to specific areas and school districts.

Digital Learning Day started in 2012 as a way to spread awareness and ensure that more children have access to innovative educational opportunities—no matter where their school is located.

Since its creation, Digital Learning Day has generated a place for educators to share and learn about innovative teaching practices. It truly flourished into a nationwide celebration once teachers realized it isn’t solely about laptops, but also about having the best possible learning methods for their students and enhancing a teacher’s role in a classroom. It’s about closing the digital divide between students, decreasing unequal access to technology, and providing each student with the best possible chance to succeed.
