Navigating the Future: AI in Publishing Course Launches This June at UNG

In the spring of 2024, the University of North Georgia Press gathered a room full of writers, publishers, and storytellers for its first-ever Creative Transactions mini-conference. The event was built on a simple premise: bring people together to talk about the real, everyday challenges of publishing—submitting manuscripts, building platforms, and reaching readers.

In the weeks that followed, we mulled over our guests’ many thoughtful questions from the event. Writers wanted to know more—about pitching their books, about marketing in a digital world, and most of all, about how to keep up with a publishing industry that seemed to be changing faster than ever.

One main theme stood out: how do you stay competitive as a writer when the rules are shifting beneath your feet?

Grappling with this central question inspired the University of North Georgia Press to create something new.

Now, a little over a year later, we’re excited to launch “AI in Publishing,” a four-week virtual course designed to help writers build confidence and clarity in a rapidly evolving landscape—one where artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly visible role.

A Course Created with Writers in Mind

The idea for this course didn’t spring from a trend—it came from listening to people. The writers who attended Creative Transactions weren’t asking about algorithms; they were asking about impact, and in 2025, one of the most powerful forces driving impact across industries is artificial intelligence.

“Writers want to know how to stand out, how to stay relevant, and how to do it all without compromising their voice,” said Dr. BJ Robinson, Director of UNG Press. “This course is about giving them practical tools, but also space to think deeply about what AI means for their creative lives.”

Developed and taught by Dr. Robinson and Managing Editor Corey Parson, AI in Publishing meets writers where they are—whether they’re pursuing traditional publishing, self-publishing, or building their own multimedia platforms.

What the Course Covers

Over four weeks, participants will explore how to use AI tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot to improve their writing, editing, and marketing efforts. Topics include:

  • The ethical and strategic use of AI in publishing workflows
  • Enhancing author discoverability through content generation and metadata
  • Integrating AI into social media, newsletter creation, and audience engagement
  • Navigating AI support in areas like book design, translation, and audiobook production

Each week includes focused assignments, and participants will complete a final project applying what they’ve learned. No textbook is required, and the class is entirely virtual.

  • Course Dates: June 2–30, 2025
  • Tuition: $399

Why It Matters Now

AI is reshaping publishing—from how books are edited to how they’re discovered. But with that power comes complexity. This course doesn’t just show you what AI can do—it helps you decide what it should do for your writing practice.

“AI isn’t going away,” said Parson. “But with the right knowledge, writers can use it to support their goals without sacrificing their values. We want to give them that confidence.”

Whether you’re a novelist, poet, freelancer, or academic writer, AI in Publishing offers a chance to future-proof your career, sharpen your competitive edge, and expand your creative possibilities.
