The Basics of Book Metadata

Authored by Cheyenne Clenney, UNG Press Intern

How do you sort through the millions of options available in physical and digital bookstores? What makes one book stand out in an endless sea of similar titles? That is where metadata comes in—the behind-the-scenes information that helps categorize books.

What is Book Metadata?

Book metadata consists of the basic elements that identify a book: title, author name, author bio, book description, publication date, BIC code, price, and keywords that relate to the book and make finding it easier when searched for (King). In short, metadata is all the information that makes a book appear when a reader searches for certain related topics. It also ensures that the book is listed within the correct parameters in a catalog, like genre or related titles.

Think of it like code; the metadata is placed in ISBN records, author websites, and given to online retailers and bookstores (King). Additionally, for some independent authors and small publishers, it is placed in IngramSpark, a leading printing and distributing self-publishing company. This information lives within these online spaces, categorizing a book down to the smallest detail. When you look up a book’s ISBN number, for example, all the other detailed information will show up as well.

The Importance of Effective Metadata

Metadata consists of keywords that readers might type into a search engine to find a book. Selecting keywords is strategic; it connects the book’s content to the reader. The book description and author bio should include these keywords. As Carla King, publishing coach and writer for IngramSpark, posits, “Search engines use metadata as an information retrieval system to connect searchers with content and products more efficiently than ever before.” Thus, creating effective book metadata is important to getting the book into the hands of the intended audience.

Metadata goes beyond just categorizing books; it also contributes to discoverability and marketing. Increasing the chances of readers finding a book increases the chances of it being bought, making it more visible on various platforms. It is a tool used by authors and publishers, and according to Val Giordano’s ISBNdb article What Is Book Metadata and Why It Matters, the sheer volume of books published globally “shows us the importance of efficient metadata management so that every book, regardless of its origin or language, is discoverable and accessible to readers worldwide.” Using metadata as a marketing tool is especially important in the digital age, where thousands of books are available at the touch of a button, and authors primarily promote themselves online.
