Blend In, Stand Out presents Major General William S. (Bill) Chen’s leadership philosophy—blend in to understand, build trust, and earn respect; stand out through performance and results—applied to the often-overlooked world of weapons and weapons systems development. Drawing on his five-decade career spanning senior leadership in the U.S. Army and defense industry, Chen combines personal experience and candid reflection with practical lessons connecting leadership principles to action. 

Blending the practical focus of a leadership guide with the personal reflection of a professional memoir, Blend In, Stand Out grounds its leadership lessons in real-world decisions where technical excellence, strategic vision, and effective leadership determine whether vital capabilities reach those in harm’s way. Through those experiences, Chen demonstrates how trust, initiative, sound judgment, and a commitment to developing others can help leaders navigate complex, high-stakes programs and organizations. Each chapter connects Chen’s lessons to practical applications, offering aspiring and seasoned leaders guidance for achieving results within and beyond the defense industry.

Major General William S. (Bill) Chen, U.S. Army, Retired, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from the University of Michigan, where he is recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus in Aerospace Engineering, and an MBA from Auburn University. He retired after a 32-year Army career as Commanding General of the U.S. Army Missile Command and Program Executive Officer for Missile Defense. He then spent 18 years as a defense industry executive leading the development and management of advanced armaments and combat vehicle systems. Drawing on five decades of leadership in government and industry, Chen brings a unique perspective to leadership in weapons systems development and program management, as well as in complex, high-stakes organizations.

As a partner to the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Book Program, UNG Press will aid AUSA’s educational mission by producing high-quality books to be designated as “AUSA Books.” These books will address such subjects as military land power and land warfare history, technology, combat, and strategy and tactics. This curated collection will serve to help and educate members of the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense, the AUSA, U.S. government officials, and the general public. To further these goals, AUSA will promote UNG Press’s AUSA Books by linking them to AUSA’s website, listing them in AUSA publications as a member benefit, and reviewing them in ARMY magazine or other AUSA publications.
