How to Host a UNG Press Author: Building Literary Partnerships Across the Region

At the University of North Georgia Press, books are only the beginning. Each title we publish reflects the ideas, histories, and voices of a region that thrives on connection. These connections often come to life not through the page, but through shared conversations in bookstores, libraries, and community gathering spaces.

Hosting an author event has the potential to spark those conversations in lasting ways. We’ve seen it happen—an engaged audience at a downtown bookshop, a circle of chairs in a small-town library, or a lecture hall filled with students who linger long after the closing remarks. These are the moments when a story becomes something more than a solitary read. These are the moments when books begin to build community.

UNG Press authors include scholars, veterans, novelists, educators, and artists. Many of them live and work in Georgia or the broader Southeast. They are deeply invested in the same communities that support independent bookstores, public schools, civic organizations, and cultural programming. Their work often intersects with themes of military history, Southern identity, open education, interdisciplinary teaching, and visual storytelling. A shared value among them is a desire to educate, engage, and give back.

Organizations that host a UNG Press author gain access to more than a speaker. They participate in a collaborative effort to bring meaningful dialogue to their audience. Events might take the shape of a book signing, reading, roundtable, guest lecture, or facilitated discussion. The tone and structure depend on the needs and goals of the host, and our team can provide assistance in preparing supporting materials such as promotional flyers, event graphics, and social media content.

Venues that plan to sell books at an event must partner with a bookseller or wholesaler who can order the title through Ingram. Authors are not permitted to sell books independently, in order to preserve Press rights and retail partnerships. If your venue is not a retail space, we can work with one of our community bookselling partners to facilitate book orders and event support within the region.

Because event planning takes coordination, all inquiries must be submitted at least three months in advance. This lead time ensures that authors can be scheduled appropriately, books can be ordered, and publicity can reach the right audience. We do our best to match interested hosts with authors who are aligned in topic, tone, and availability.

A successful author visit does not require a large stage or a national spotlight. Many of the best events grow out of small, committed communities—book clubs, classrooms, local reading series, and library programs—focused on seeking conversation and connection. Our authors understand the value of those moments and are honored to be invited into them.
