This week, UNG Press Director BJ Robinson attended the 65th Annual Meeting and Exposition of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA). Held in Washington, D.C., this year’s conference is from October 14 to 16, 2019. Robinson joined 30,000 attendees from over 80 countries in viewing 700 exhibits and 130 panels and programs. In the vast Exhibition Hall, amid night vision goggles, body armor, helicopters, and tanks, were books.
Front and center in the AUSA Pavilion were books on military history, leadership, and national security, including Jon Mikolashek’s Blood, Guts, and Grease: George S. Patton in World War I (University of Kentucky Press, 2019) and Donald E. Vandergriff’s Adopting Mission Command: Developing Leaders for a Superior Command Culture (Naval Institute Press, 2019). All the books displayed there were also featured in an Author’s Forum. Authors read from and signed copies of their books and answered audience questions—all while being filmed by CSPAN. All of these books were published in partnership with the AUSA Book Program. And this year, the UNG Press signed a partnership agreement with the AUSA Book Program.
The AUSA conference delivered “the army’s message by highlighting the capabilities of organizations and presenting a wide range of industry products and services.” Attendees could climb into a helicopter, sit atop a tank, and open the cover of a book. All are equally important on the battlefield.
