“I do believe in fairies! I do! I do!”
—J. M. Barrie
Fairy tales make up the majority of my reading. It doesn’t matter what retelling, what culture, or what skill level; if it’s a fairy tale, it has space on my shelf.
Books have always been a means to escape. We can lose ourselves for a brief moment into a world other than our own. Sometimes, these escapism worlds follow us back to our own. Even when finished with the book, we dream of it and so we write fanfiction and create fanart and design cosplay.
Fairy tales, in their infinite retellings, their unending stories, offer us a special form of escapism. They tell us that yes, the world can be scary, but your foes can be defeated. The curse can be broken. The Happy Ever After is within your reach.
We must live in the real world, but that doesn’t mean we can’t escape into others when needed.
