“He noticed the street was unusually quiet for the time of day.”
He noticed the street was unusually quiet for the time of day. At this point, school buses would roll away from the street. The neighborhood kids would be yelling and running home, jubilant at their precious freedom. The corner house’s dog normally ran up to the kids, following them and begging for belly rubs. Sounds of laughter and play would enter his open window, marking the end of his day’s work.
Now, the children are gone, and school is a memory of times past. Silence and wind greeted him as the empty street crumbled around its memories. So this is how the world sounds at the end.
