I first read If on a winter’s night a traveler in high school. it was the class’s introduction to postmodern literature. Could a novel be a novel if it was disjointed and confusing and—gasp—written in the second person?
Written by Italo Calvino, If on a winter’s night a traveler was originally published in Italian in 1979. It was first published in English in 1981 and is still popular today. It is now one of my favorite books because of its odd narrative and because I can appreciate the writing skills needed to have a strange, postmodern novel make sense in its original language and in its translated languages.
